He thought of her every day. Everything around him led somehow, unexplainably,to her. A wave of longing washed over him whenever a memory came to the surface of his mind. Sometimes it became so unbearable he would close his eyes to shut out any more images that could possibly become pain. But even when he enclosed himself in darkness, pictures kept flashing by: strawberry blond hair blowing in the wind, cloudy grey eyes, that free spirited face…

If she was the day, then he could be the night. Many thought of him as a traitor and nothing more. Pure evil, some said. But that evil was merely a veil covering the stars and the true black. If torn away… then the heavens would be seen, pure and free as well. He wanted it to be lifted, not for his sake but for hers.

She loved him. He had never doubted it. And she had never needed to say it. The tender way she looked at him, the regret in her voice when they had been sorted into different divisions… he had known all along. It was his strength, his fuel.
And he loved her, too. That he had never doubted, either.

Together, they made one day. Light and darkness. A perfect whole. It filled his heart with joy, with happiness, but with heartache as well. Because they were on opposite sides now, split by a huge chasm. It would be possible that they would engage in battle too, against each other in a duel to kill…

But that day, though ever approaching, was not yet here.
He had to savor with the time he had left. Settling, Gin relaxed.
